A show on Italian colonialism. Italian colonialism. A repressed and denied story, which lasts 60 years, begins already in the nineteenth century, but which in the common imagination is reduced to the 5 years of the Fascist Empire. Dirty things under the mat, there were other times, it wasn't us, who cares. It's past water, cologne, what does it have to do with the present? Yet it has remained on us like flypaper, in sentences made, clichés, in our own gaze. Seen from Italy, Africa is all the same, abstract and mysterious as they imagined it in the nineteenth century; Somalia, Libya, Eritrea, Ethiopia are names, not real countries, and in any case "we" have nothing to do with "them"; the Africans themselves are all the same.

And the refugees, the migrants that we find around us today, on the bus, on the street, they too are abstract, images, bodies, identities whose existence is unreal: we cannot justify them in our present. Like an old nightmare that returns, incomprehensible, that falls on us like a boulder.
